Designers who work with recycled materials are hardly unusual nowadays and most people would agree that the more that do so the better. But much more rare are those who are willing or able to create several different objects from the same item. Graphic artist and teacher François Royer does just that. Using oil barrels, he has created the Stanker collection, which includes items such as chairs, tables, barbecues, shelving units and lights, priced from €300.
Featured on www.psfk.com, Royer made his first barrel creation in his Paris basement in 2003, establishing a design company, Motxo (pronounced Motcho) Design (www.stanker.design.free.fr), and extending his recycling range to include shopping trolleys and washing machine drums. Nicholas Spencer
François Royer works some kind of sculptural - design magic and transforms nasty discarded oil barrels into beautiful furniture. In his hands, industrial waste gets a new life as unique end tables and mobile storage units.
Royer started his recycle-design business five years ago in his Paris basement. It has expanded into a full on design company, Motxo Design which now makes a line of recycled items made out of materials such as: old shopping carts and washing machine drums.
